A Great Example of Differential Weathering

This photo, taken in the White Cliffs area along the Missouri River in central Montana, shows a friend standing near a concretion. Concretions are typically formed in sandstone such as the Eagle sandstone (Cretaceous age), which makes up the cliffs here as well as those along the Yellowstone River in the Billings area, including the "Rimrocks". Volcanic Eruption Viewed from Space Station

This footage, obtained by the International Space Station, provides a unique view of Sarychev Volcano (Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in the early stages of an eruption on June 12, 2009. To download a large still photo or the movie from the NASA Earth Observatory Website, CLICK HERE. The site also provides a detailed description of the photo and discusses theories about the interesting clouds.
