Zooniverse - Real Science Online

A friend of mine recommended this site (Thanks Rick!). The Zooniverse is a collection of web-based citizen science projects that use the efforts of volunteers to help researchers deal with the flood of data that confronts them. CLICK HERE to access the site. I haven't had time to look it over real closely. You need to set up an account, log in, etc. On the surface it looks really interesting. Let me know what you think.

Solar Eclipse as Viewed From Geostationary Satellite

CLICK HERE to see the shadow of the Moon move across Earth's surface during the solar eclipse of November 3, 2013. The photo shown here was taken from the MIR in 1999. Here is another website with nice images of shadows of the Moon on Earth's surface as viewed from space.

A Great Example of Differential Weathering

This photo, taken in the White Cliffs area along the Missouri River in central Montana, shows a friend standing near a concretion. Concretions are typically formed in sandstone such as the Eagle sandstone (Cretaceous age), which makes up the cliffs here as well as those along the Yellowstone River in the Billings area, including the "Rimrocks". Watch the short presentation below to see how differential weathering exposes them. To learn much more about how concretions form, CLICK HERE.

See more photos from our October trip through the White Cliffs.

Volcanic Eruption Viewed from Space Station

This footage, obtained by the International Space Station, provides a unique view of Sarychev Volcano (Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in the early stages of an eruption on June 12, 2009. To download a large still photo or the movie from the NASA Earth Observatory Website, CLICK HERE. The site also provides a detailed description of the photo and discusses theories about the interesting clouds.

Hommocks Earth Science Department Resources

The Hommocks Middle School (Larchmont, NY) Earth Science Department has put together an impressive collection of resources to help students prepare for the the New York Regents Earth Science Exam. I especially like the animations. Here are a couple good ones that I found on their site.

Mid-Latitude Cyclone Animation

Annual Changes in Weather

There are many more. Here is the link to their site: www.hmxearthscience.com Thanks to Mr. Wing, Mr. Goldstein, Mr. Frantzis, and Mr. Sammartano!
